Dad Knapping

Thanks for visiting my page! I am Bob Hanselman, flintknapper and avocational archeologist. I have been Flintknapping since 1994, when I made my first arrowhead. I love to design pieces from stone that reflect our past ancestors yet have a modern aesthetic.  I enjoy creating custom pieces of all kinds, from all kinds of stone, so please contact me if you are interested in purchasing my crafts. I am a past President of the Foothills Chapter of the Archeological Society of South Carolina, and enjoy attending knap ins throughout the Southeast. I am available for private and public instruction, so feel free to contact me.

TYPES OF  KNAPPING

I generally use two types of knapping. One is Abo, or Aboriginal. This generally means I use rock on rock to produce a knapped blade or point.

The other type is  Slab knapping, meaning I take a large rock and cut it into slabs kind of like a loaf of bread, using a rock saw with a diamond blade. These slabs are then shaped into preforms and knapped using copper tools I have made myself.
